Very fine sands can become dusty and compact too tightly, while excessively coarse sands can become unstable and difficult to maintain. A well-graded blend of particle sizes generally produces a more consistent riding surface.

Rounded particles behave like tiny ball bearings and can roll over one another, reducing traction and stability.
